Trudee A. Ettlinger, PhD, APRN, LADC, Math Science Division/Department of Nursing, Norwich University, PO Box 85, Underhill Center, VT 05490, 802-899-3737/802-485-2612, trudeern@earthlink.net

A community-based group intervention program was designed to deliver substance abuse health education to an at risk population of low income rural mothers. Substance abuse and maternal child professionals co lead the group following a dedicated 10 week curriculum. Over the past 3 years the program(Rocking Horse) has served 388 Vermont mothers. Outcome evaluation data suggest a consistent sgnificant trend of increasing risk perception of ATOD for maternal health. Equally important the program has drawn attention to the presence of substance use for this population within the service network. Program findings highlight a target group for whom outreach, access, and acceptability are key to developing an intervention program to address ATOD risk.
