Healthy People 2010 is a comprehensive health promotion and disease prevention agenda for the United States. With 467 objectives in 28 focus areas, Healthy People 2010 is designed to improve the health of all people during the first decade of the 21st century. The Healthy People 2010 family planning focus area contains 13 objectives with national targets set for the year 2010. The primary data source for tracking the family planning objectives is the National Survey of Family Growth. Previous NSFG surveys conducted between 1973 and 1995 were solely based on personal interviews of women 15-44 years of age in the civilian non-institutionalized population of the United States. The most recent NSFG survey, conducted in 2002 and early 2003, included men and women. Using data from 2002-3 survey this presentation will assess progress of the family planning objectives monitored with the NSFG towards meeting their national targets for the year 2010. Additionally, progress towards the second overarching Healthy People 2010 goal of eliminating health disparities will be discussed.
