• Preventing the spread of SARS and other infectious diseases across our nation's borders by providing public health specialists to monitor and evaluate passengers arriving at airports and seaports nationwide
• Mitigating the risk of bioterrorism attacks by registering and inspecting clinical laboratories nationwide that may possess and transport anthrax, smallpox, and other dangerous biological agents
• Helping the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health execute a Grand Challenges in Global Health Program by managing scientific peer review for more than $200 million in biomedical research grants annually
• Preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS in Africa by launching and managing the Ethiopia HIV/AIDS Resource Center, the country's first public source of HIV/AIDS information
