As the world becomes increasingly urban, the urgency and importance of understanding how the urban environment affects health grows exponentially. The first presentation will thus review the empiric research assessing the impact that urban living has on population health, discuss the rationale for considering the study of urban health as a distinct field of inquiry, and offer examples from research about the relation among the urban environment, substance use, and mental health. The second will focus on the burgeoning problem of traffic and motor vehicle accidents in urban settings, presenting a case study from Pakistan. Furthermore, because increasing urbanization does not bring corresponding prosperity, much of the world’s urban population lives in poverty, with limited access and use of health care facilities. The final two presentations will review innovative delivery systems in Africa and Asia reaching marginalized urban populations.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the session, participants will be able to: • Explain how characteristics of the urban environment affect population health issues and discuss possible interventions aimed at improving features of the urban environment and hence, improving health • Discuss the use of community based organizations to generate demand and improve access to services for the urban poor.
