This session will focus primarily on issues faced by racial and ethnic minorities in the development and treatment of diabetes. Topics include successful strategies for recruitment and retention of minority participants into randomized clinical trials, examination of the demographic and SES correlates of diabetes risk and prevalence in different communities, and the relationship between family history of diabetes and health behaviors of adults without diabetes. | |||
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Identify social and economic determinants associated with diabetes and its complications in racially/ethnically diverse communities. 2. Understand the association between smoking, age, diabetes and erectile dysfunction. 3. Identify major risk factors among minorities with diabetes that are important to diabetes prevention programs. 4. Describe the association between positive family history of diabetes and preventive health behaviors such as nutrition, weight loss behaviors and diabetes screening. | |||
