| This session presents information concerning the detection of disease occurrence using pre-diagnosis data. Topics to be discussed include the development of a system to detect drug-resistant gonorrhea, and syndromic surveillance in rural health regions. Using syndromic surveillance systems to detect and measure occurrence of influenza will be discussed in the context of recent outbreaks, and in the context of the 1918 Influenza Pandemic. | |||
| Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Describe a comparison of ED chief complaints for influenza and influenza-like illness (ILI) with preliminary ED diagnosis of influenza and ILI. 2. Describe the steps to detect Quinolone-resistant Neisseria gonorrhea by developing a surveillance system with partners including state epidemiologists and laboratorians, clinical laboratories, and private providers. 3. List the data sources and disease syndromes utilized for syndromic surveillance in the two northeast Tennessee public health regions. 4. Recognize the shifting age distribution of epidemic and pandemic influenza mortality. 5. Articulate the definition of influenza-like-illness as described by the CDC. | |||
