This session focuses on approaches to improve the health of children, from a multidisciplinary group functioning on a state-wide level to influence public policy, to regional and community-based groups engaged in participatory research and intervention projects involved in identifying and addressing environmental factors associated with childhood asthma. One community group developed a "tour" of local neighborhoods to examine environmental hazards and threats, that includes information on environmental justice, air pollution health effects, and suggestions for getting involved. Another group describes the reduction of school diesel bus emissions which are linked to asthma and other respiratory problems. Lessons learned are documented in a kit that lays out key steps school districts can pursue to reduce emissions and evaluate results from the retrofit projects. The session will include ways to identify and analyze successful asthma intervention programs, and the factors that contribute to their success.
Learning Objectives: Discuss ways to develop multi-disciplinary and community-based approaches to address the broad aspects of children's environmental health. List factors that place children at risk from environmental exposures. Describe criteria for successful and promising environmental interventions for asthma.
