Four different issues are addressed in this session: sustainable agriculture and food production; overuse of animal antibiotics within the agricultural community; animal confinement practices in food production; and water protection in agricultural watersheds. These issues seem quite distinct one from the other. However, each case study illustrates the public health principles of coalition building, prioritization, and strategic planning. In each case, joint planning and action by health professionals and those working in agriculture create innovative solutions to difficult problems.
Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to: •Recognize the current areas of overlap and potential issue areas for common action between sustainable agriculture and public health advocates. •Understand a process of building coalitions of health professionals and advocates to address inappropriate use of antibiotics in agriculture. •Identify the key threats to human and animal health inherent in current confinement animal production (for food) and identify alternatives. •Assess the need for utility-based source water protection in vulerable agricultural watersheds and prioritize actions necessary to initiate source water protection plans in rural communities.
