Oral
Environmental Health: Political, Economic and Legal Issues
Effective environmental health depends upon the successful blending of a complex mix of political, legal and economic factors. The public frequently misunderstands the prerequisites for successful environmental health practice, and policy makers often underestimate the resources and legal tools needed to assure and maintain the network of state, local and national institutions that support environmental health activities. The purpose of this session is to illustrate some of the current challenges faced by environmental health practitioners who strive to create and support conditions leading to health and well being, point out current challenges, and suggest what changes are needed to maximize environmental protection. By attending this session, participants will gain a greater understanding of, and appreciation for, the interrelatedness of environmental health in public health practice.
Learning Objectives: In particular, this session will: 1. demonstrate the interrelationship between effective and coordinated legal authorities and policies in state and federal governments and examine current short comings in this area; 2. show the importance, and value of, timely and unbiased scientific advice to the development of good environmental health policy; and 3. point out the difficulties for state environmental health practitioners in obtaining the resources, authorities and public support for proactive programs.
