Community-Based Participatory Research: A Review of Definitions, Methods, Implementation and Funding Criteria
AHRQ commissioned the Research Triangle Institute (RTI)- University of North Carolina (UNC)Evidence-Based Practice Center to conduct a systematic evidence review on community-based participatory research (CBPR) approaches to improved health. Four papers in this session draw from the AHRQ report to synthesize definitions of CBPR, summarize implementation efforts with regard to research methods and community involvement, identify gaps implementing this approach, and suggest funding criteria for CBPR. The final paper describes one approach for reviewing and assessing participatory and non-participatory research applications.
Learning Objectives: 1. Define Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) and describe critical elements of CBPR 2. Summarize the implementation of CBPR with respect to research methods and level of community involvement 3. Apply funding criteria to evaluate CBPR projects
