Public health professionals have increasingly come to recognize that there are special challenges for the development of policies and programs to promote health and health care access for immigrants and refugees. The papers in this session cover a wide range of topics, including assessment of medical interpreter programs, compliance with isoniazid therapy for latent tuberculosis infections, assessing and improving health policies for immigrants in Israel, and programs of non-governmental organizations that serve health needs of internally-displaced persons in Cambodia. All the presentations share a concern for methods of evaluation and improvement of programs and policies that promote refugee and immigrant health.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, participants will be able to: 1. describe several programs for health promotion among diverse refugee and immigrant populations. 2. discuss criteria to assess the success of interventions to promote health and health-care access for refugees and immigrants. 3. recognize the importance of evaluation as an element of design and implementation of policies and programs to serve the health needs of refugees and immigrants.
