This session examines the role played by group-specific cultural practices in influencing health risks and health promotion among diverse immigrant populations. Papers will discuss a variety of issues including the use of complementary and alternative medicine, cultural influences on use of cancer screening services, and the implications of culture for the success of physician interventions and health promotion programs. | |||
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) will be able to: 1. Recognize the influence of ethnically-specific health practices on health risks and health-care-seeking behavior in immigrant populations. 2. Identify factors that affect the impact of acculturation on health risks. 3. Assess the importance of acculturation for health education and promotion within immigrant communities. | |||
