| This session will feature 4 presentations that represent programs funded by the Indian Health Service for urban and reservation populations as well as tribally operated programs. In addition, the presentations will focus on how to identify diabetes risk factors in small children as well as adults. Each paper will discuss best practice models that have been used to identify and describe the diabetes problem in native populations. One presentation will discuss how to develop and evaluate quality diabetes education and treatment programs. Each paper will show how type 2 diabetes is an epidenic in native communities but that native investigators, public health professionalsand communities are leading the way in applying public health strategies to tackle this epidemic. | |||
| Learning Objectives: 1.Identify best practice models used in the Special Diabetes Programs for Indians. 2.Identify preventable risk factors for diabetes and other chronic conditions as well as administer the NHANES that is culturally acceptable. 3.Describe early onset diabetes-related risk factors to be included in community education, interventions or clinical in native children. 4. Evaluate quality diabetes education programs in Indian communities. | |||
