| It is widely accepted that making family planning and reproductive health (FP/RH) services available is not sufficient to eliminate unmet need or ensure effective use. Quality of care is also needed, including attributes such as choice of methods, technical competence of providers, quality of information, interpersonal relations, referral mechanisms, and an appropriate constellation of services. Measuring quality of care and using results to improve programs has been a challenge, but many advances have been made in recent years. This panel’s presentations describe many aspects of FP/RH quality, factors that affect or facilitate quality, and how to measure and improve it. Topics include the influence of national FP/RH policies on quality, the effects of incorporating a gender perspective, expanding method choice, and improved counseling on quality, and ways to measure and evaluate quality improvements (international and US examples). Research results presented should provide practitioners with state of the art knowledge and skills to measure and improve various aspects of quality in their programs, and ultimately better meet their clients’ FP/RH needs. | |||
