CDC's Obesity Prevention Program: National and State Strategies
In 2001, the U.S. Surgeon General issued a call to action to prevent and decrease overweight and obesity, assigning responsibility to all strata of society—individuals, families, communities, schools, worksites, health care, media, industry, and government. The CDC Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity’s National Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity Prevention program was established to prevent and reduce obesity and other chronic diseases by supporting states in the development and implementation of science-based interventions. This session will provide an overview of national and state obesity prevention programs with examples from specific states. State interventions will be discussed.
Learning Objectives: At the end of the session, participants will be able to: 1. Describe the goals of the CDC obesity prevention program; 2. Discuss examples of state interventions to influence the physical activity, television viewing, breastfeeding, and food environments; 3. Discuss lessons learned by states.
