Updates: Call to Action & Healthy People 2010
Current national efforts to improve oral health center on the National Call to Action to Promote Oral Health and the Healthy People 2010 objectives. The Call to Action builds on the 2000 report, "Oral Health in America, a Report of the Surgeon General". Broad areas of action include: change perceptions of the public, policymakers, and health providers; remove known barriers between people and oral health services; accelerate the building of the scientific and evidence base and accelerate the application of research findings to improve oral health; ensure the adequacy of public and private health personnel and resources; and expand public-private partnerships. The Healthy People objectives identify specific, measurable indicators of progress. This session will describe current efforts and progress to date on these initiatives in addressing the “silent epidemic” of oral diseases.
Learning Objectives: 1. List the challenges and opportunities for implementing appropriate actions on the community, state, and national levels to improve oral health. 2. Describe current status of progress on the Healthy People 2010 and the National Call to Action to Promote Oral Health. 3.
