The pharmaceutical industry is funding an ever increasing percent of clinical research. This talk will use quantitative reports to explore the influence of that funding in five dimensions: the direction of medical research, sharing of information, stopping clinical trials, publication of research results and finally the outcome of clinical research. The conclusion is that there are serious problems in all five areas associated with industry funding. Proposals have been made to reform the process and also to completely severe the relationship between investigators and industry. Reform or revolution, it is clear that there needs to be changes made in the way that pharmaceutical research is funded.
