OBJECTIVE: In this presentation the audience will learn about how national expenditures on SUD treatment are distributed across different types of providers METHODS: The study employed numerous nationally representative databases and statistical and actuarial methods to develop estimates of expenditures by provider type. Estimates are available by each major provider type (e.g., hospital, physician, specialty substance abuse centers) as well as by locus of care (e.g., inpatient, outpatient, residential). Provider distributions within specific types of payers are also available. RESULTS: The distribution of expenditures across some of the larger providers were: Hospitals - 29% (80% of SA expenditures for hospital care were in general hospital and the rest were in specialty psychiatric and substance abuse hospitals); Specialty substance abuse centers - 34%; Multi-service mental health organizations - 20%; physicians and other professionals. The distribution across type of care was: 28%: residential, 22% inpatient, 43% outpatient, 7% insurance administration. The mix of providers varies by payer type. CONCLUSIONS: The majority of substance abuse services are provided by specialty substance abuse centers, mental health centers, and hospitals (83%).
