This presentation will highlight the work of the National Center on Substance Abuse and Child Welfare (NSCACW) including the development of policy tools, on-line training curricula and guidance for states and communities on screening and assessment issues in the child welfare and substance abuse systems. Dr. Young, the Director of NCSACW will discuss the barriers to collaborative efforts that are often encountered when children are brought to the attention of the child protection service system and their parents have substance use disorders. Finally, descriptions of models and initiatives to address those barriers and the common ingredients found in many of the initiatives will be presented.
