This presentation will highlight the work of the National Center on Substance Abuse and Child Welfare (NSCACW) including the development of policy tools, on-line training curricula and guidance for states and communities on screening and assessment issues in the child welfare and substance abuse systems. Dr. Young, the Director of NCSACW will discuss the barriers to collaborative efforts that are often encountered when children are brought to the attention of the child protection service system and their parents have substance use disorders. Finally, descriptions of models and initiatives to address those barriers and the common ingredients found in many of the initiatives will be presented. Papers and monographs of the NCSACW presented and discussed during this workshop will include:

Framework and Policy Tools for Improving Linkages Between Alcohol and Drug Services, Child Welfare Services and the Dependency Court Screening and Assessment for Family Engagement, Retention and Recovery—SAFERR White Paper on Funding Comprehensive Services for Families with Substance Use Disorders in Child Welfare and Dependency Courts

Learning Objectives:

• At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to discuss the barriers to collective efforts to address the issues, will be able to list the efforts of the National Center on Substnace Abuse and Child Welfare, and will be able to describe models and initiatives that address the barriers and issues.
