Status of federal efforts to promote further research in the area of racial and ethnic disparities in the quality of care

H. Jack Geiger, MD, Dept. of Community Health and Social Medicine, City University of New York Medical School, 138th Street and Covent Avenue, New York, NY 10031, 212-650-6860, jgeiger@igc.org

The problem of racial and ethnic disparities in the quality of clinical care in the United States has been amply documented and also the subject of major reports, including Unequal Treatment, issued by the Institute of Medicine, and The Right to Equal Treatment, by Physicians for Human Rights. Agencies of the federal government have major responsibilities under domestic and international law to take steps to promote research that responds to these needs. This presentation will address the degree to which NIH and other agencies are responding to these research needs.
