Organizing oral health systems for older Americans: Private/public collaboration

Paul Glassman, DDS, MA, MBA, Associate Dean, University of the Pacific School of Dentistry, 2155 Webster St., San Francisco, CA 94115, 415 929-6490, pglassman@pacific.edu

As in other areas of the country, oral health for older Californians is a serious and neglected problem. The University of the Pacific School of Dentistryıs Pacific Center for Special Care has worked with the State of California Commission on Aging to collaborate on oral health objectives in a State Plan for Older Californians. This has resulted in a Statewide Task Force on Oral Health and Aging, led to legislative hearings on oral health and aging and resulted in proposals for model programs to address the identified problems.

On a national level, Special Care Dentistry, a national organization devoted to improving oral health and well-being for people with specials needs has worked with members of Congress to craft legislation to guarantee oral health coverage for low income seniors under state Medicaid programs.

This presentation will discuss these state and national collaborations and the value of partnerships in improving oral health for seniors.
