In today’s world, critical and complex public health problems are intermingled with changing and unpredictable environments, and also unprecedented and unheard of challenges. This present day reality requires up-to-date public health leaders with advanced abilities to resolve and take action on real social and organizational problems and at the same time learn in very fast track modes. Based on this down-to-earth and practical philosophy, during the past two years, a new training and research center for public health leader’s development has been established in Puerto Rico. It was founded as an initiative of the PR Health Department and the University of Puerto Rico Graduate School of Public Health. The Puerto Rico Public Health Leadership Institute (PRPHLI) is geared to strengthening and fostering public health intersectorial collaboration by improving competitiveness of the public health leaders working at government agencies, private organizations, health services system, community based organizations, academia and the media, among others.
This session will describe the innovative PRPHLI public health leadership competence conceptual model, depict exemplary illustrations of the diverse action learning strategies and practices used in public health leadership and team development, and will also share the principal lessons learned in unfolding transpersonal, transorganizational, transformative and collaborative public health leadership proficiency and capability. These new leadership capacities the PRPHLI is pursuing in the emerging public health leaders will help reform the public health system infrastructure, create new programs, services and products, and will also improve quality and customer satisfaction; which will enhance and bring about the betterment of the public’s health.
