Employee exercise of rights granted them under the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Mine Health and Safety Act (as well as other workplace regulations) play a critical role in the implementation of those statutes. Workers in workplaces represented by labor unions are significantly more likely likely to exercise those rights because of the protections unions afford workers who complain, as well as the role that unions play as agents for employees. This talk will review evidence that as a result of these factors, implementation of OSHA, MSHA, and other workplace policies is positively affected by the presence of labor unions.
