This project provides a method for changing community based health care to meet needs of women from diverse communities by educating providers to deliver care that is culturally aware and focused. The objectives are: 1. The students will demonstrate increased cultural awareness, cultural knowledge and cultural encounters as they progress through the nurse practitioner programs. 2. The students will demonstrate improved cultural skills and cultural desire as they progress through the nurse practitioner programs. 3. The diversity and distribution of nurse practitioner students and faculty will increase These students were more likely to remain in their rural area to practice. This approach has been highly effective with nearly four out of five students practicing as nurse practitioners in rural Virginia. Often, students would see only patients of similar ethnic or racial backgrounds due to the distribution of diverse populations. Their knowledge about other cultures was more restricted than students in urban Tidewater Virginia. This is used to educate nurse practitioner students in health history, physical examination, and clinical decision-making. The desire to develop cultural competency programs from the “ground up” and to work from the actual experiences of members of racial and ethnic groups has guided the development of this project. The experiences of patients described during focus group meetings guides the development of new culturally focused curriculum that encourages partnership among providers and clients.
