Smarter energy choices can protect public health: What public health professionals should know

John Podesta, Center for American Progress, 805 15th Street, NW, Suite 400, Washington, D.C, DC 20005, 202-682-1611, ajohnson@psr.org

This session will examine a secure energy future that not only sustains our natural environment, but which will also protect public health and enhance national and global security. The promotion of conservation; improvements in energy efficiency; clean, sustainable fuel choices in energy production; and the expansion of efforts to control hazardous and toxic airborne pollutants from power plants and other industrial emissions sources, including mandatory controls on greenhouse gas emissions, can virtually eliminate the vulnerability of our energy infrastructure and significantly reduce the health risks associated with fossil fuels.

Health professionals have a respected voice in our communities and with our lawmakers. As health professionals it is important to make your voice heard and advocate for a sustainable energy future that is protective of public health.
