Biomonitoring, vulnerable populations, and precaution

Ted Schettler, MD, MPH, Science and Environmental Health Network, 124 Peterboro Street, Number 12, Boston, MA 02215, 617-536-7033, tschettler@igc.org

Dr. Schettler will present an overview about toxic chemicals exposure and possible linkages to human health outcomes, as supported by biomonitoring studies. He will describe recent studies indicating that certain populations, such as children, may be particularly vulnerable, and discuss how biomonitoring data indicating toxicant exposures may or may not explain the apparently rising incidence of certain childhood diseases. He will describe the significance of biomonitoring to traditional epidemiological studies and will develop an analysis about how and when preventative measures might be appropriate, given the uncertainties of risk assessment, and the inherent problems of compiling and analyzing weight of evidence information, which includes biomonitoring data.
