Improving access to accurate medical information and health literacy is a priority among the many health-related needs of U.S. ethnic and minority groups. The reality is that culturally and linguistically appropriate health materials are often limited for this population. The Latina Health Initiative of the Boston Women’s Health Book Collective (BWHBC) developed a training guide for promotoras de salud using the Spanish version of the women’s health book Our Bodies Ourselves. This presentation will describe the Promotoras de Salud training project of the BWHBC and the development of a participatory training guide in Spanish for community health workers. These materials promote healthy and beneficial cultural practices through participatory learning and the use of women’s experiences as important sources of knowledge about their health and their bodies. The guide includes modules on reproductive health and rights, sexuality, maternity, sexually transmitted infections, violence against women, substance abuse, and mental health. We will share practical lessons learned through designing the training guide and implementing our Promatoras de Salud project. We also will explore strategies for the adaptation of existing health materials for use as tools by community health workers in diverse communities.
