Recent events have altered the landscape in tobacco control, including program cuts by state legislatures and health departments, virtually eliminating some (Mass.) and severely limiting capacity among others. The RWJF/AMA SmokeLess States program came to an end after 10 years of providing capacity to private-sector initiatives in scores of states, and voluntary health agency support is also diminishing. Federal support cannot fill the void. This session is a discussion of the current vitality of state-level tobacco control, and of the challenges that face the future of our movement.
