The National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE), with support from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health, has collected and posted on the Internet summaries and hyperlinks to laws and policies from the 50 states on selected K-12 school health topics. These include general health education requirements; HIV, STD, pregnancy, and tobacco-use prevention education requirements; qualifications for health educators and school nurses; requirements for administration of medications; requirements regarding indoor air quality and toxic chemicals; and tobacco-free school mandates. Policies vary tremendously from state to state: summaries on selected topics will be highlighted, such as that 31 states emphasize the teaching of sexual abstinence though none exclusively require it; 24 states allow students with chronic health conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes) to possess and self-administer prescribed medications; and only 4 states have comprehensive tobacco-free schools policies. Key findings will be contrasted with best practice recommendations.
