Identification of sources of risk of systematic nicotinism problem in Polish young people

The study is a part of a questionnaire program, entitled “I don’t smoke- a new challenge for young people”. 50 000 Polish students, aged 15-19 were included in this study. The respondents come from 100 towns, randomly selected from 16 provinces. The results of the study were put to the statistic analysis. The following statistic procedures were used to identify the factors that influence the most intensively smoking of tobacco: test of homogenity chi- square, Pareto analysis and discriminatory analysis. For the estimation of existence and intensity of interdependence between two or more categorical data the log- linear analysis was used. 5% inference error was assumed with significance assigned at p<0,05.

Conclusion

1) Study has proved that initiation of smoking of tobacco happens at a very young age. The great part of young people smokes over 20 cigarettes a day. 2) Negative symptoms of smoking, such as: cough, headaches and lowered exercise tolerance appears quickly after one has become a smoker. 3) Factors, such as: stress and meetings, during which alcohol is served, favors intensive smoking. 4) Spending much time with smokers influences the decision of starting smoking and of its continuation.

The results of this study might be useful in elaboration of an efficient educational- preventive project addressed to young people, which would aim at elimination or minimize the factors that induce them to start and continue smoking.
