Background: The Nevada Behavior Risk Factors Surveillance Survey for 2000 reported that 66.9% of Nevada’s Black population participated in physical activities during the past month, while only 29.7% sustained regular physical activity. In 2000, the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension included aquatic exercise as part of its cardiovascular disease prevention project. All individuals at risk for cardiovascular disease and other behavior related diseases can benefit from the increased physical activity that aquatic exercise provides; and it is a suitable alternative for those who have difficulty with traditional types of exercise. Method: The aquatic exercise program was initiated in July 2002 with one class weekly, three weekly classes were held in 2003. Participants were originally recruited from the faith community. Recruitment increased to include the local community and community resource centers. Classes were held at two community center pools. The Physical Activity Instructor and two trained Community Based Instructors conducted the classes. Results: The Aquatic Exercise Program has recruited approximately 75 participants in the past eighteen months; many have become regular in attendance. Attendees are African-American-90%; 76%, female and 24% male. Class size ranges from 9 to 30 participants. Program evaluation rates the program as being very effective in improving overall health and very enjoyable. Conclusion: Aquatic exercise is a suitable alternative mode for those who have difficulty with traditional types of exercise and a viable alternative for those who are searching for variety of in fitness activities.
