Presenter will profile the youth violence prevention work of Youth ALIVE!, a non-profit public health organization dedicated to reducing violent injuries to and deaths of youth living in violent communities in California through education, prevention, and research.
Youth ALIVE! trains multi-ethnic urban youth to serve as leaders in the violence prevention field. These high school youth, who live in neighborhoods called “the killing fields,” educate their peers on how to prevent gun violence, family and dating violence, alcohol and drug-related violence, and how to develop advocacy strategies. This program is called “Teens on Target.” Youth ALIVE! also employs local young adults, who have experienced and overcome violence in their own lives, to serve as peer mentors and case managers to young people who are survivors of violence-related injuries. The immediate goals are to prevent retaliatory violence, re-injury, and re-entry into the criminal justice system. This program is called “Caught in the Crossfire.” Youth ALIVE! partners with public agencies and other organizations to conduct research to measure program outcomes and to develop violence prevention policies and implementation strategies. The presenter will discuss the development and implementation of these programs, promising results from a recent program evaluation, and the development and impact of two violence prevention policies.
