The World Health Organization (WHO) attributes 4.9 million deaths annually to tobacco. That figure could reach 10 million by 2030. The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS), an international surveillance project developed jointly by WHO and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), enables countries to monitor youth tobacco use and guide implementation and evaluation of tobacco prevention and control programs. Since its inception in 1998, more than 100 countries and over 1 million youth have participated in GYTS. As CDC’s contractor for logistics and data processing, RTI International has had an integral role in supporting the GYTS. RTI supplies participating countries with survey materials; processes and scans completed survey forms; and creates electronic data sets to facilitate preparation of each country’s survey reports. This presentation will describe the GYTS and the unique aspects and challenges associated with RTI’s GYTS responsibilities, including: supplying participating countries with their required survey materials; receiving completed survey forms from countries and preparing them for processing; scanning survey forms to create urban, rural, regional, and country-wide data sets; procedures for consistent documentation of data sets for reporting purposes; procedures for continuous process improvement.
