This presentation describes how research is being translated into public health practice to change unhealthy environments. The research reports produced by the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth (CAMY), a project of The Pew Charitable Trusts and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, have created new opportunities for advancing the debates at the state level about how to protect youth from alcohol industry marketing practices that jeopardize the health and safety of American young people. In many states, alcohol advertising is regulated through administrative rules that have received little attention from the public health community. All states’ administrative rules are reviewed and open for revision on a rotating schedule, but the potential for public health reforms in this area has remained largely unexplored. The presentation will review steps taken by Ohio Parents for Drug-Free Youth to use the research reports generated by CAMY to build a statewide coalition on behalf of alcohol advertising reform, bring attention to the issue in the news media and among opinion leaders and policy makers, and effect change in state administrative rules governing alcohol advertising and marketing.
