Research conducted by the authors indicates that there are three types of health promotion programs involving health professions institutions and faith-based organizations (FBO). "Faith-placed" programs are developed by health professionals and use the FBO as a program location, "faith-based" programs are developed by and for a congregation's members, and "collaborative" programs are developed and undertaken jointly by an FBO and community-active health professionals. Project GoodNEWS is a lifestyle enhancement program developed through a collaboration between Central Dallas Ministries (CDM) -- an inner-city FBO serving predominantly low-income African-Americans -- and UT Southwestern Medical Center's (UTSW), Division of Community Medicine. The program seeks to promote healthy lifestyle choices through a focus on four program components: Gardening, Nutrition, Exercise, and Wellness. The 17-week curriculum-based program is currently being pilot tested among CDM staff (N=40), in three African-American congregations (N=40), and in one largely Hispanic congregation (N=40). The pilot study findings will be reported and discussed, including program effects related to general health indicators, the Ferrans and Powers Quality of Life Index, the Herth Hope Index, and the World Health Organization Well-being Index. The authors will discuss the program effects in the context of community health improvement, and will provide information for understanding the requirements for effective collaboration between FBOs and health professions institutions.
