"A Model for Accessibility" and “Great Expectations”, provides project directors, faculty, students and staff with guidelines for ensuring that individuals with disabilities are truly represented in the work that we do. The model represents the culmination of nearly a year’s work by a special committee set up by the Center on Disability Studies at the University of Hawai’i to look at the inclusion of individuals with disabilities in all of the projects, programs and events that are sponsored by the Center. “Great Expectation” was developed by a Leadership Trainee at the Center on Disability Studies. The idea for this companion book came about when it was discovered that the handbook provided for teaching at the University did not provide any information on disability related issues. Our goal is also to see that these handbooks are adopted by other departments and projects throughout the University and the community. The model is comprehensive and includes important information about: 1. Using respectful language; 2. Confidentiality; 3. Access guidelines, including guidelines for web sites & print, hiring, research, and conferences & meetings, and 4. Proactivity. The Model also includes several appendices that cover (a) converting to Braille, print and tape formats, (b) responsibilities as an employer under the ADA, (c) customer service practices and individuals with disabilities, (d) using TTY or Relay Services, (e) an accessibility checklist and, (f ) set-up requirements for meetings.
