The Intermountain Injury Control Research Center (IICRC) was contracted by the Utah Department of Health, Violence & Injury Prevention Program (VIPP), using community-based task force meetings to develop a comprehensive strategic plan for injury and violence prevention/interventions for Utah. This plan will be used to help with the coordination of resources and activities that would maximize constrained resources, minimize the duplication of prevention efforts, create a document anyone can read and find supporting agencies relating to specific action items, and increase social capital (both bonding and bridging) of the communities served. The task force meetings and strategic plan focused on the following areas: pedestrian and bicycle injuries and deaths, seatbelt use, child restraint use, child abuse and neglect, domestic violence, sexual assault, rape, and suicide. Healthy People 2010 objectives, additional databases and relevant studies/reports were incorporated for background information supporting the focus areas. The focus group process and document were organized around the resource agencies and associated interventions. Action items for the focus areas will be reported and used to demonstrate a plan that can actively be used by community members and agencies. The process from contacting of key community participants, facilitation and organization of the focus groups, creation of community action items, eliciting feedback from the community members on the action items, the final write-up, and dissemination of the plan will be presented. A unique approach of using software to manage community contacts and merging it into a publishable report will be shared.
