Innovative educational methods for teaching nurses environmental health

Barbara Sattler, RN DrPH FAAN, School of Nursing, University of Maryland, 655 W, Lombard Street, Baltimore, MD 21201, 410 706-1849, bsattler@son.umaryland.edu

Public and environmental health nurses can enhance their environmental health educational efforts by leveraging resources and the outreach capabilities of a wide range of agencies and organizations. In this presentation, several new partnerships for education will be discussed: 1) Partnerships with the federal government, in which a nursing/CDC National Center for Environmental Health effort will be highlighted; 2) Partnering with a professional association, in which an environmental health nursing/American Nursing Association project will be highlighted; 3) Partnering with a for-profit organization, in which an environmental health nursing/Medscape project will be described; and 4) Working in coalitions, in which the Nurses’ Workgroup role within the Health Care Without Harm Campaign will be discussed. In each of these diverse efforts, nurses took the leadership in creating collaborations and identifying areas of common ground and common goals to provide the nursing community with new information and guidance on environmental health issues in order to enhance nursing practice and advocacy work. New technologies were employed, including state-of-the-art, web-based education and outreach programming.
