A Response to State Mandated Health activities: Challenges and Opportunities

The General Assembly of Georgia passed legislation requiring public and nonpublic post-secondary educational institutions to give students residing in campus housing information about meningococcal disease and vaccines. The governor signed the legislation on May 23,2003. The act went into effect on January 1,2004.

At Thomas University, a small nonpublic institution in Southwest Georgia, the RN to BSN students take a 6 credit Community health/Public health course sequence in which a teaching learning project to groups is a requirement. The RN to BSN students were challenged to provide the mandated educational program to the 62 students residing in campus housing . The RN to BSN students rose to the occasion and planned, implemented and evaluated the program. This learning activity resulted in some unexpected benefits.

In this poster presentation the process, activities and lessons learned will be identified and explored in depth. They are: Team building, Development of survey instruments, Development of evaluation tools, Collection of relevant statistics Analysis of collected statistics and other data, Dealing with broken projectors, small rooms and unruly students .and an Increase in knowledge about meningococcal diseases and the vaccines
