This study uses Legacy Media Tracking Survey (LMTS) data to measure current and established smoking and intentions to quit among young adults in the U.S. Smoking declined substantially in this population from late 1999 through January 2003, but these statistically significant decreases are reversed between January and July 2003. From 1999 to January 2003, the percentage of young adults who intended to quit smoking remained essentially unchanged. From January to July 2003, however, current smokers were less likely than they had been to intend to quit smoking in the coming month. This study explores these trends in smoking and intentions to quit among young adults, as well as their beliefs and attitudes about smoking and the tobacco industry.

The LMTS is an American Legacy Foundation survey of youth and young adults ages 12-24. The primary purpose of this random-digit dial survey is to track awareness of and reactions to Legacy’s anti-tobacco ads and other pro and anti-tobacco messages in the media. The survey also measures youth beliefs and attitudes about tobacco and youth tobacco use.
