More than 44,000 of the estimated 70,000 uninsured adults in Denver are employed. Denver Health, the public safety net system in Denver, in collaboration with the Denver City Council and the Mayor’s office engaged in a collaborative effort to investigate the feasibility of creating health coverage for uninsured employers and employees within the City and County of Denver. A grant of $50,000 from a city councilperson funded the process. A multidisciplinary task force convened to explore creative models to enable Denver employers to provide health care coverage for their employees. The task force examined possible funding mechanisms for the program. Initially, the task force reviewed local uninsurance data as well as local and national efforts to expand health coverage, including a small business product previously offered by Denver Health. An analysis of current and potential legislation to support the implementation of the model was conducted. The process and outcome of this collaborative effort to create health coverage for uninsured working adults in Denver will be presented in detail at the conference.
