Over the last years, there has been a growing interest in health risks and health ressources in student populations. In a survey at the University of Applied Science Neubrandenburg (Germany), students and staff members were assessed regarding health behaviour, lifestyle and perceived quality of life. 316 out of 1040 students (response rate >30 %) and 81 out of 200 staff members (response rate 40.5 %) provided complete data sets. The questionnaire was based on pilot studies of the ‘German Network of Healthy Colleges’. The results showed that 51.5% of students were not sufficiently vaccinated against polio and 18.8 % against measles. Only 63 % of students indicated to use condom regularly when starting sex with a new partner. 37 % of the students confessed to consume illegal drugs. On the other hand, 90.9% of the students felt socially supported by at least two people. 74.3 % of the students indicated to exercise for a minimum of 20 minutes at least once a week. The perceived quality of life on a visual analogue scale (0-100) was 75.3. It can be stated that students were at risks for low vaccination for polio and partly for measles. It was surprising to see that many students consume illegal drugs. Health resources were evident for social support and regular exercise. Quality of life assessment was higher than in other German student studies. It can be followed that the University of Applied Science in Neubrandenburg needs specific health promoting programs in order to improve health state in the student population.
