Registered Nurses returning to college with the intention of completing their Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree attend with varied motivations for returning to school and professional experiences in nursing. Few students come with community health nursing education or experience and often find the course material and the theoretical perspective of community health nursing new and challenging. Supporting the student's development and practice of thinking ‘beyond the hospital walls’ and motivating students in this pursuit proves to be a challenge for both students and faculty. To continue to support a more holistic view of health and healing and extend the world-view of students, faculty elected to include a global health nursing concentration course for senior nursing students. Following their public health nursing experience, many students choose to expand their understanding of global public health issues and the impact these global issues have on nursing in the United States and abroad by electing to enroll in a global health nursing concentration class. This is an evaluation of the value of adding a global health nursing concentration to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing curriculum for RN/BSN completion students and a summary of the student experience in their own words.
