A description of an innovative alcohol prevention model utilizing brief interventions by a pharmacist in a community healthcare setting is provided. The model although described from the perspective of a pharmacist may also be applicable to other healthcare team members such as social workers, physicians’ assistants, and nurse practitioners. The model has been successfully implemented in three urban, community based clinics for the past two years. This experience will allow for the presentation to accurately discuss real world barriers and solutions to the growing need for alcohol prevention in healthcare settings. A framework will be presented in how to promote alcohol prevention through brief interventions and educational information. The presentation will focus on preparation, training and the tools needed to implement the intervention. Approaches to budget, time, space requirements, advertisement and solicitation, methods for screening, and intervention will be discussed. In conjunction with the discussion, samples of the actual tools used will be presented. This model has the potential to become a useful model for the adoption of alcohol prevention activities in healthcare settings.
