In the spring of 2001 current public health nursing leadership in Oregon acknowledged the impact of factors associated with the nursing shortage on PH nursing. Drawing on literature about nursing, leadership, and public health institutes we developed a year long institute experience for public health nurses in Oregon. The institute combines the pairing of the future nurse leader with an established leader as a mentor, content modules delivered through various media, and a year long leadership project.
The Institute focuses on leadership development for practicing public health nurses in local and state health departments. Using recently retired and current PHN leaders as mentors, drawing upon local expertise, and web based content assignments; the Institute has been developed without additional financial resources.
After graduating two classes of eight and almost completing a third class of ten we have identified several factors to consider when starting a like enterprise. These include the degree of emphasis to place on a project, the different relationship objectives of the mentor and scholar, timing of different modules, expectations of mentors, expectations of staff, management versus leadership contents, and technology capabilities.
