Dating from March 1996, Indiana’s Medicine/Public Health (M/PH) Initiative has a rich history. Supported in part by funds from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Indiana University Schools of Medicine and Nursing, Marion County Health Department, and Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH), M/PH has endured due to its partner members’ commitment to an integrated public health system and healthy communities. Now the M/PH Initiative is a key collaborator with ISDH in the writing of the 2004-07 state health plan. With coordination by the IU Department of Public Health, Indiana Public Health Association and ISDH, M/PH sponsored 11 regional community forums in fall 2002 and a health summit in October 2003 to get input on health priorities, objectives and strategies from a range of local health professionals and community, business, and government leaders. About 550 individuals participated in these sessions. M/PH is reviewing the state health plan that will be released by May 2004. M/PH partners will contribute to the plan’s dissemination through workshops at several public health conferences and at regional district meetings in late spring. M/PH is part of a process designed to ensure that communities are engaged in a proactive dialogue about using local resources and strengthening partnerships with business and others to improve health outcomes and eliminate health disparities. The plan, which complements other state initiatives, will serve as the roadmap for this process. M/PH’s goals are to sustain community input for planning through shared leadership and to have an impact on assessment, policy development, and evaluation.
