The purposes of this study were to realize the rate of children who have suicide ideation and to investigate its correlates. A longitudinal study, Child and Adolescent Behaviors in Long-term Evolution (CABLE) was conducted in 2001. Data were obtained from 2,075 fourth graders, 1,652 fathers and 1,841 mothers in northern Taiwan. Stepwise logistic regression procedure and structure equation model were used to construct a predictive model. It was found that prevalence of having suicide ideation among children was 19.77%. The significant variables related to suicide ideation include sex, resident area, substance use, depression, social loneliness, mother's age, parental punishment and family support. Results of the structure equation model showed that personal and family factors have direct effect to suicide ideation. They also have indirect effect through the function of depression or social loneliness derived from lack of family support. In order to prevent suicide ideation among children, parents and teachers should pay more attention to children's problem behaviors and emotion status. Children need higher family support and appropriate punishment. Those who have suicide ideation should be screened as early as possible. Life education and social skills were suggested in primary schools.
