This project focused on developing a survey to measure the practice of parish nursing. The framework for developing the survey was the specific roles of the parish nurse as described by the International Parish Nurse Resource Center; health educator, integrator of faith and health, personal health counselor, referral agent, facilitator of volunteers, developer of support groups, and health advocate. The target audiences for the survey are members of congregations and communities who receive care and services from the parish nurse. Several methods were utilized to determine if the survey was statistically valid. The survey was reviewed by a focus group of parish nurses for content validity. Lastly, pilot studies were conducted to establish reliability, sensitivity and consistency of the instrument. The survey had been administered to urban and suburban congregations in the United States. Findings indicate support of the role of the parish nurse in congregations and changes in health practices as a result of contact with the parish nurse.
