Objective: To evaluate the impact of DEEP training on the knowledge, skills, practices and clinical outcomes of Latinos and African Americans with diabetes participating in three self-care centers on Chicago’s Southeast Side. Methods: The DEEP is a 10 session diabetes self-management education program developed with Latino and African American participants using participatory education methods. Pre-, post-, and three month follow-up intervention data on knowledge, attitudes, practices and clinical measures including weight and glycosylated hemoglobin (A1c) are being taken for all participants in DEEP self-management training conducted in three self care centers serving primarily African Americans and Latinos with Type 2 diabetes in Southeast Chicago between February 2003 and September 2004. The Midwest Latino Health Research, Training and Policy Center of the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Jane Adams School of Social Work, developed the DEEP curriculum as a diabetes self management tool, which is being implemented in collaboration with the Chicago Southeast Diabetes Community Action Coalition through a CDC REACH 2010 grant. Expected Results: Pre-, post, and three month follow-up-intervention data are being entered and analyzed for participants who complete the 10-week course to measure the program’s ability to improve diabetes outcomes and reduce disparities. Participants who complete the 10-week curriculum are expected to increase their knowledge and self-management skills, and demonstrate better clinical outcomes.
