Background: To maximize resource efficiency and effectiveness requires that community health practitioners (CHPs) know how to find and implement data-demonstrated solutions to community health problems. New Hampshire CHPs often lack the time, knowledge, and/or skills to accomplish this task.
Objective: To facilitate NH CHPs use of evidence-based public health practice (EBPHP) by developing a website that provides: 1) an overview of EBPHP, 2) access to skill-building resources, and 3) links to existing public health evidence.
Methods: Resources about EBPHP theory, requisite skills, and existing public health evidence websites were identified. An adaptation of the Western Center for the Application of Prevention Technology’s schematic for classifying Best and Promising Practices was used to classify evidence strength. A survey to evaluate website userfriendliness and utility was created. The website structure was developed in concert with a website design consultant.
Results: The resulting website, the e-Roadmap to EBPHP (www.publichealthsolutions.org), contains four sections: EBPHP theory, skill-building resources, evidence links, and a feedback survey. The theory section provides basic information about EBPHP and resources for advance learning. The skill-building section provides links to develop skills such as action planning. The evidence section provides a description of the evidence strength categories, a strategy for locating EBPHP, and annotated evidence links. The feedback section includes an eight question survey. Since “going live” in November 2003, the website has received 1688 successful hits.
Conclusion: A website to assist NH CHPs in implementing EBPHP has been successfully developed. Future work will focus on enhancing usability and comprehensiveness.
